Joseph Elbert Norman married twice: (1) Ella Elizabeth M. (née Sikes), on 12 Dec 1894, in Tattnall County, Georgia; and (2) Mary Hopkins (née Dean), ca. Sep/Oct 1899, presumably in Tattnall County, Georgia. The first marriage is documented in a marriage license recorded in the Tattnall County, Georgia Marriage Book D, page 263. The second marriage date is inferred from the 1900 census, which records Mary as having been married for 9 months as of 6 Jul 1900.
Mary's headstone gives her birth year as 1877. This is almost certainly incorrect. In every US Federal Census in which she's enumerated (1880-1950), her age implies a birth year no earlier than 1879. To wit: age 1 in 1880; age 20 in 1900; age 30 in 1910; age 47 in 1930; age 57 in 1940; and age 70 in 1950. Lastly, the 1900 census gives her birth date as "Dec 1879". We conclude that 1879 is the correct year of her birth.
